Establishment of Hakko Denshin Ryu
In 1997 Soke Garcia Antonio and Soke LaMonica Michael together set the foundation for Hakko Denshin Ryu, blending their collective skills and philosophies to shape the school’s unique approach.
They named their school Hakko Denshin Ryu, translated as “The Heart of the Eight Light,” a homage to the profound teachings of their master, Shodai Soke Okuyama.
In 2001, both were honored with the title of “Soke,” recognizing their leadership and contributions to the martial arts community, cementing their roles as pivotal figures in the global spread and evolution of the discipline.
Working across continents, they upheld the core values of unity and compassion, bringing students together and guiding them through annual Taikais in both America and Europe. Their mutual respect and unwavering support embodied the spirit of friendship and collaboration fundamental to Hakko Denshin Ryu.
Following the passing of Soke LaMonica in 2024, Soke Garcia continues to champion the art they built together, offering support guidance and encouragement to all American and Canadian practitioners who carry on the legacy of “The Heart of the Eight Light.”
